Choose Costa Rica for Retirement took me on quite a journey, introducing me to a country that seemed far superior and safer than Mexico. From my days as a boy, reading National Geographic, I remember that Costa Rica used to be called the “Switzerland of the Americas.” Choose Costa Rica for Retirement teased us, wetting our appetites for more information, but it solely set us in motion to take our inaugural tour of the country. This book is full of good reasons to consider Costa Rica for retirement. It will quickly inform you that Costa Rica has had no army or navy since 1948. 27% of their budget is spent on health care. And it’s been a democracy for over 100 years. Those who settle here are, in a sense, on a permanent vacation, and that may be the best reason of them all. To read the entire blog post, click here. |

If you want to get a sense for how visually beautiful Costa Rica is, this is THE book you want. It is by far our favorite book for its photos, as well as for a good overview of the country, its people and customs, biodiversity, and more. The publisher describes it this way: “Insight Guides Costa Rica includes a section detailing Costa Rica’s history, 8 features covering the country’s life and culture, ranging from the spectacular plant life to the best coffee in the world, a region by region visitor’s guide to the sights, and a comprehensive Travel Tips section packed with essential contact addresses and numbers. Plus 7 maps, including a National Parks and Reserves map, and many impressive photographs.” You can’t help but want to visit this wonderful country after reading and viewing this book. |

One of the strengths of this book is that it covers not only living in Costa Rica, but doing business there as well. Here’s the synopsis from Amazon.com: “CultureShock! Costa Rica is an indispensable companion for anyone who wishes to live and work amongst Central America’s famously friendly people. Life in Costa Rica often turns out to be more complicated than it seems at first glance but this book will not only help you quedar bien (be on good terms) with the Ticos, it will also provide practical tips on how to settle down in the country, such as where to stay and how to get around. Learn about local attitudes and tradition, and how to maneuver through the country’s business customs and environment. CultureShock! Costa Rica will help you adapt to this intriguing society while appreciating its fascinating and unique qualities.” |

To learn about the people of Costa Rican, otherwise known as “Ticos,” The Ticos: Culture and Social Change in Costa Rica can’t be beat. Here is a great review from the Amazon.com Web site:
“When I was researching Costa Rica as a candidate place for retirement, despite some effort, I was unable to find much literature beyond the standard travel and retirement guides and a few rather dry tomes of some international institutions. I was therefore delighted to come across and read The Ticos. The writing is a nice blend of hard facts and well-researched statistics with deductions from personal interviews, all of which is neatly intertwined with astute personal observation and personal anecdotes. It is very well-written. The language flows as easily as in a good novel. All in all, a most interesting book. I strongly recommend it to foreign residents of Costa Rica. I equally recommend it to those considering Costa Rica as a country for residence, whether for retirement or business.” Chris Couzens, La Voz, June 1999 |
